Monetaria annulus is a shell snail in the Family Cypraeidae, the so-called cowrie shells.
Cowries have rounded, smooth shells. In a living animal, the edge of the mantle is pushed over the shell. Where the coat meets on the back it forms a line in the pattern. They come mainly in the tropics before, are often nocturnal and omnivorous.
Monetaria annulus is one of the most common cowrie snails found in the Indo-Pacific. In the tidal area and in shallow water zones they can be found in a wide variety of habitats, for example on sand, silt and in seagrass meadows. You can also spot them there during the day. Monetaria annulus with the ring (there are two similar species!) is coral-friendly, eats algae, carrion and vegetation.
The species name “annulus” means ring and refers to the yellow ring on the smooth shell.
