The genus Cerithium is distributed worldwide and includes around 60 different species alive today. The genus counts as one Family the needle snails (Cerithiidae).
Sometimes the snails become this Family also called horn snails.
In general, all Cerithiidae peaceful and harmless vegetarians.
Fossil needle snails are often found in coastal deposits that are between 2 and 60 million years old (Tertiary).
The shell of the needle snails has a round mouth, with a narrow channel for the short one Sipho the snail.
The case is often slim, long and often decorated with fine knots or crowns.
But there are also almost smooth types.
The housing cover, which is attached to the animal's foot, is made of horn. Hermit crabs love to move into the empty snail shells genus – my hermits currently live in Caribbean Cerithium prefabricated houses.
