Light, water movement in the tank and the fact that you are photographing through a glass pane often pose challenges in creating a sharp and true-color coral image.

However, with a little preparation & practice, it is surprisingly easy to take good coral pictures. In the following we would like to give you some tips:

1.Equipment

Of course, good mirror reflex cameras are best suited for photographing corals. You can find many details about the correct setting of a mirror reflex camera HERE

If you are one of those who do not own such a camera - no problem! With the help of the apps below, you can easily bring the required settings to your smartphone for less than 5€. The brightness setting or the white balance is particularly helpful here in order to display the colors as clearly and realistically as possible.

2. Positioning of the frag

Position your frag as close as possible to the disc of your pelvis. It is best to line up the frag to be photographed in the sand on the windshield. When doing this, tilt the frag slightly towards the pane so that you get a good perspective of the frag when taking the photo. After placing it on the disc, give the frag a while longer until the polyps have fully unfolded again.

Alternatively, very good results can be achieved if you have a frag deck that you can place just below the surface of the water. The frag can be placed under the water surface, which allows for very good pictures. Highly recommended for eg Zoas.

3. The right angle

To avoid distortion of the image through the aquarium pane, you should always photograph at a 90-degree angle. If you take photos with a smartphone, you can best press it to the pane. This way you ensure a good angle, avoid reflections and at the same time have a stabilizing effect like with a tripod!

In the case of the frag deck, you can take great photos through the water surface when the current is switched off.

4. Camera setting

Now it's time to get a feel for the settings of your camera or your smartphone app. Practice creates masters!

With the help of these tips, you should take a big step towards good pictures of your frag. Sharp, true-color, and consistent images are the best selling point and make your shop look professional and tidy. Accordingly, you should always pay attention to good pictures.
